Water – a culinary essential throughout Oman. Pomegranates are probably the most successfully grown crop here, the fruit is prized in neighboring regions and commands high prices.

Wadi Shab and the East Coast – PRIVATE Day Tour

wadi-shab

The limestone mountains south-east of Muscat rise from the sea up to almost 2000meters.

Over the millennia they have been deeply cut into and today steep sided narrow valleys, locally called wadis, cut into the slopes. Springs of water allow small intensive agricultural farms to grow dates, citrus, mangos and other tropical fruit.

As this regions is on one of the worlds ancient sea routes there are several archaeological sites along the coast. Qalhat is the one that have been recorded by medieval travelers including Marco Polo and Ibn Battuta. It is now an archaeological site with the only standing building the mausoleum locally named Bibi Miriam.

The coastal settlement of Tiwi is set at the mouth of the picturesque Wadis Shab. Golden honey colored mountains hang precipitously above dark green date oasis. Along the bottom of the wadi attractive walks can be taken alongside small steams of water, fed by small water springs set into the wadi’s side.

The sink-hole at Bimmah where the waters from a wadi have run underground and created a now collapsed cavern.

Wahiba Sands – PRIVATE Day Tour

wahibah-sands

The Wahiba Sand Desert has been formed from about 130,000 years ago and is a beautiful mix of golden quartz and pale lime grains of sand. It stretches from the northern villages for almost 200 kilometres to the Arabian Sea in the south.

The desert’s sparse vegetation is supported by dew and fog caused by the sharp drop in the temperature at night. This moisture and food enables a surprising variety of wildlife to survive, including Sand Fox and Grey Monitor Lizards.

Close to the desert are some small Oasis with date palms. These rely on Oman’s falaj, the classic water system which irrigates the agriculture. Seeing this intensive the agriculture is a remarkable testimony to the effort of the local population over the centuries.

The mountains in the distance have been cut into by valleys, locally called wadis, and with the occasional date oasis along their base, they are often quite spectacular.

Of course there are camels, the dromedary, and these can be found roaming through the sand dunes. However, in much the same way as there are thoroughbred horses, there are bloodlines of camels which are renowned for racing, both locally and in neighboring countries.

This Oman day tour is about 8 hours includes:

Bahla UNESCO Fort & Oman’s Grandest Canyon - PRIVATE Day Tour

grand-canyon

The slopes of Jebel Shams cascade down from Oman’s high mountain peaks which are cut into by steep valleys which in Oman are called Wadis.

After Visit to Bahal UNESCO fort we proceed to Jabal Shams. Walks here are at over the magic 2,000 meters meaning they are high altitude and not for those with susceptibility to altitude sickness. Snow occasionally falls on the higher slopes and at all times of the year the temperature is cooler than in the plains below.

The life style here is limited by the availability of water and so Goat herding has been the traditional way of life and the goat hair is used to create woven products, which you can buy as a souvenir. Look out for a few small areas with farms, they use water from tiny springs, just above the fields.

The great canyon of Wadi Nakhar is often called ‘The Grand Canyon’ and with a drop of up to 1,000 meters it’s easy to see why. In places this is only just wide enough for the vehicle to pass, in others it opens up to grand vistas including to cliff edge above.

Walks along the cliff edge offers views which cover a wide area. However to appreciate the scale, a walk just below its edge offers new vistas with almost each step.

Jabrin Castle, AL Hamra and Misfah village – PRIVATE Day Tour

jabrin-castle

Jabrin Castle with its painted ceilings and peaceful interiors is a really nice contrast to the rugged mountains that overlook it. Overlooking a vast plain with Oman’s highest mountain in the far distance Jabrin is an imposing building built in the late 17th century. Its painted ceilings are now unique in Oman’s forts.

The Castle at Jabrin was built around 1670 and was for a time where the ruler of Oman lived. This period was one of increasing wealth in Oman and Jabrin is one of the more famous buildings from this period.

Jabrin is within the administrative area of the town of Bahla. Within the town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site fort and within the town’s center are traditional potteries.

The nearby town of Al Hamra and small farming village of Misfa were established around the same time as the castle at Jabrin was built. Al Hamra has lots of old mud brick mansions, some are still lived in while others are empty. Walks along the alleys allow glimpses into the date gardens next to the houses. In the mountains above Al Hamra is the village of Misfah which has one of Oman’s special water systems called a falaj running through the small fields.

This Oman day tour is about 8 hours includes:

Sur, Wadi Tiwi & The East Coast - PRIVATE Day Tour

sur

Sur has been a major trading town on the coast south-east of Muscat for hundreds of years. Set around a lagoon which provides a natural harbor close to Oman’s Eastern Peninsula, Dhows (the traditional Arab wooden sailing ships) would set sail to the Omani port of Zanzibar in Africa, India and Ceylon and far off China.

The limestone mountains south-east of Muscat rise from the sea up to almost 2000meters. Over the millennia they have been deeply cut into and today steep sided narrow valleys, locally called wadis, cut into the slopes. Nakhl & Wadi bani Auff - PRIVATE Day Tour

mountain-village

North-west of Muscat is an area which has a myriad charms. Great mountains, steep valleys and classic forts.

Nakhl Fort sits on its own small hill dominating the plain towards the sea and the Wadis (valleys) behind. The Fort at Nakhl probably has its origins over 1,400 years ago. Enlarged during the subsequent centuries it now occupies the entire hill on which it stands. It guarded routes between the sea and the ways going up into the mountains. This is a picture perfect Omani fort and as a result has been visited by visiting Royalty including Britain’s Prince Charles. The fort almost seems to grow out of the rock surface on which it is built and it looks over the tops of the Date Palms in the oasis. Beyond the fort the mountains soar to almost 2,000 meters and in places deep wadis have cut into their sides.

These wadis have occasional villages to the sides of the wadi’s bottom, creating a splash of green against the hues of brown. Where springs of water trickle down there are a few villages high above the wadi with a mix of date and other fruit trees.

Amongst the great wadis are Wadi bani Auf and Wadi Sahtan both of which can be driven through in a 4WD vehicle. Small villages and date oasis add to the interest in the valleys. There are a few beekeepers here whose honey commands high prices for its taste and purity.
